Women's Soccer in D.C. since 1982

General Information

The Washington Area Women's Soccer League (WAWSL) offers 11v11 women's outdoor soccer during the spring and fall. The spring season runs from late March through mid-June, skipping Memorial Day weekend.  The fall season runs from late August through mid-November, skipping Labor Day weekend.  During the spring and fall season, we play almost exclusively on Saturdays.  Some years, there is also a smaller 7v7 league during the summer. The summer season games are on weeknights. Our fields are located in DC and nearby suburbs.  WAWSL is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is also affiliated with the state and national soccer associations.

About 35-40 teams participate in the league and are divided into several divisions:

  • Premier Division (inactive as of Spring 2015) - for players of high competitive ability; generally, ex-college players. Many Premier Division teams compete in national tournaments.
  • First Division - for players of very competitive ability; many have played high school and/or college soccer. Many First Division teams compete in regional tournaments.
  • Second Division - for competitive, semi-competitive, and recreational players. Some women have years of experience, but a few players are playing soccer for the first time.
  • Masters 1 - for experienced players age 30 or older.  Most women have played soccer for many years, and some are dual-registered in the First or Second divisions.
  • Classic - a mixed division made up of two types of teams: recreational teams of players age 30 or older and recreational open teams (all ages), comprised of "Third Division"-level teamsSome players have played their whole lives, some are returning to soccer after a long break; many players are new to the sport.
